Weeks 1-11

Assessment: SBA Task: Case study (50 marks, covering at least 4 topics). Controlled test 1 (100 marks, include at least 4 topics).

Assessment: SBA Task: Presentation (50 marks, include at least 4 content topics). Controlled test 2 (150 marks) or June examination (300 marks) on Term 1 and Term 2 content. Issue research project for submission in Term 3.

Three types of business sectors and classification of challenges according to the three business environments.

Quality of performance

Quality concepts and differences, benefits of good quality management systems, quality indicators per business function, meaning of TQM, impact of five TQM elements, quality circles, PDCA model, impact of poor TQM implementation, and reducing cost of quality.

Management and leadership

Differences between management and leadership, application of five leadership styles, impact of democratic and autocratic leadership, impact of laissez-faire/free-reign, charismatic and transactional styles, leadership theories, and the role of personal attitude in success and leadership.

Investment: Securities

Functions of the JSE, investment decision factors, types of investment opportunities and risk factors, impact of four forms of investment, types of preference shares, differences between ordinary and preference shares, investment concepts, simple vs compound interest, calculations and recommendations based on calculations.

Investment: Insurance

Non-compulsory insurance (concepts, insurable vs non-insurable risk, principles, average clause, advantages). Compulsory insurance (types, UIF benefits, differences between compulsory and non-compulsory).

Team performance and conflict management

Team performance assessment criteria, stages of team development, team dynamics theories, causes of conflict, conflict resolution techniques, grievances vs conflict, dealing with difficult personalities and employees.

Human rights, inclusivity and environmental issues

Dealing with six human rights in the workplace, economic and social rights, cultural rights, diversity and seven diversity issues, benefits of diversity, responsibilities for health and safety, roles of health and safety representatives, and strategies to protect environment and human health.

Social responsibility

Meaning of social responsibility, link to the triple bottom line, business projects contributing to communities, identification of socio-economic issues, and ways businesses can address them and support employee/community well-being.

Corporate social responsibility and corporate social investment

CSR and CSI meanings, purposes, components, focus areas, differences between CSR and CSI, and impacts on businesses and communities.

Presentation and data response

Presentation factors before/during/after, responding to questions professionally, areas of improvement, designing multimedia presentations, non-verbal presentations, effectiveness of visual aids.

Forms of ownership

Characteristics of each form of ownership, limited and unlimited liability, impacts of different forms, and six criteria contributing to success or failure.
