Term 1 topics

Weeks 1-11

Assessment: SBA: Source-based task. PET included.

Development of self in society

Stress and stressors, signs and symptoms, positive and negative stress, and stress management. Conflict resolution skills (interpersonal and intrapersonal). Relationships and effective communication. Adapting to growth and change, including transition from school to post-school destinations.

Study skills

Develop a study plan for the NSC, revise study skills, strategies, styles, time management and examination writing skills.

Careers and career choices

Job/course and financial aid applications; research admission requirements and funding. Career portfolio and NBT. Unemployment and its impact, innovative solutions, and entrepreneurship (characteristics, opportunities, benefits, challenges, financial viability and SARS obligations).

Fraud and corruption

Concepts (embezzlement, cronyism, nepotism, bribery), causes, impacts on individuals, companies, communities and the country, and prevention strategies.

PET

Participation in programmes that promote personal fitness and health goals, movement performance, and safety issues relating to fitness exercises.

Development of self in society

Media in a democratic society, including print/electronic media, social media footprint, cyber wellness/safety and cyber bullying. Media reporting and freedom of expression limitations. Sports and nation building.

Social and environmental responsibility

Responsibilities of different levels of government, community responsibility for safe and healthy environments, and educational/intervention programmes. Formulate a personal mission and vision statement based on values, beliefs and goals.

PET

Participation in programmes that promote long-term engagement in community/playground/indigenous games or sports and safety issues relating to participation.

Careers and career choices

Job contract elements, worker rights and obligations, conditions of service. Labour laws (LRA, EEA, BCEA). Equity and redress, recruitment trends, trade unions, work ethics and societal expectations.

PET

Participation in programmes that promote long-term engagement in relaxation and recreational activities, movement performance, and safety issues.

Development of the self in society
