Annual Teaching Plan (Terms 1-4)

The Grade 12 English First Additional Language (EFAL) CAPS syllabus for South Africa follows the annual teaching plan with listening and speaking, reading and viewing, writing and presenting, and language structures across Terms 1-4. Term 1 programme areas

Weeks 1-11

Assessment: SBA Task 1: Oral (listening comprehension, 10). SBA Task 2: Writing (essay, 50). SBA Task 3: Writing (long transactional text, 30). SBA Task 4: Controlled Test 1 (40) on comprehension and summary OR comprehension and language structures and conventions.

Listening and speaking

Introducing a speaker; role play for question skills; listening comprehension preparation; listening comprehension SBA task; formal group discussions; reading aloud of a literary text.

Reading and viewing

Intensive reading of multimodal texts for research; skimming and scanning; comprehension including cartoons; visual text themes and messages; intensive reading of literature (poetry, short stories, novel, drama) with figurative language, structure, character and questions.

Writing and presenting

Transactional texts: email/webpage message; letter to the press; review; notice to a newspaper; information report; SMS/Facebook/Messenger; long transactional texts; remedial exercises on essays. Essays: narrative, reflective, descriptive, argumentative, discursive. Process writing: planning, drafting, revising, editing, proofreading and presenting.

Language structures and conventions

Vocabulary related to reading text; dictionary practice; jargon/meta language; formal structures; euphemism; question forms (open/closed); direct and indirect speech; verb tenses; concord; paragraph structure in discursive writing; logical connectors; prepositions; revision of Paper 1 Question 5.

Mid-year examinations: Paper 1 (80, 2 hrs) and Paper 2 (70, 2 hrs 30 min) OR Controlled Test 2 (55, 1 hr 30 min).

Listening and speaking

Listening to job interview texts and taking notes; discussing interviewees; job interview role play; formal researched speech and roleplay formal speeches (introducing a speaker and vote of thanks).

Reading and viewing

Reading multimodal texts and advertisements; meta-language of advertisements; intensive reading of literature (poetry, short stories, novel, drama); consolidation of plot, setting, themes and characters; reading comprehension practice.

Writing and presenting

Transactional texts: dialogue; letter formats and stock phrases; covering letter and CV; persuasive letter or film review; summary writing; short transactional text (directions, instructions, email); argument (points for/against); argumentative essay. Process writing throughout.

Language structures and conventions

Critical Language Awareness (CAPS p. 46-48); active and passive voice; modal verbs; emotive writing (adjectives/adverbs); language relevant to adverts and cartoons; revision of Question 5 in Paper 1; logical connectors and conjunctions; generalisation and stereotyping; remedial grammar and vocabulary.

Listening and speaking

Listening to job interview texts and taking notes; discussing interviewees; job interview role play; formal researched speech and roleplay formal speeches (introducing a speaker and vote of thanks).

Writing and presenting

Short transactional texts (diary entries, flyers, posters, advertisements, directions, instructions); formal letter justifying/excusing/apologising; essay writing; long transactional text (letter to the press); essay of any of the five types; short transactional text (poster or CD cover). Process writing throughout and practice for Paper 3.

Language structures and conventions

Revision of language aspects (Paper 1 Question 5); use of pronouns and names to position a character; critical language awareness (denotation, connotation, assumptions, implied meaning); formal style elements; remedial grammar and vocabulary; revision using previous exam papers for language structures and conventions (Paper 1).

Trial examination

Paper 1: Language in context (80, 2 hours). Paper 2: Literature (70, 2.5 hours). Paper 3: Writing (100, 2.5 hours). Paper 3 can be written earlier in August.
